The smell of soup boiling on the stovetop always makes me happy. It makes me even happier when I think about how delicious said soup will be. All while simultaneously boosting my immune system, supporting my digestive system, lowering inflammation…the list of benefits abound. There are always health benefits to a good bowl of homemade soup but simmering soup bones slowly over a longer period of time only makes the broth more delicious and nutritious. While it does take time, if you have a slow cooker, this recipe is easy peasy. I like making big batches, then freezing portions so it’s ready to go when I need it. Be sure you’re using bones from a good, healthy source!

Bone Broth

Prep time: 5 minutes, Cook time: 30-48 hours

Ingredients:

1. ~2lbs soup bones (I used beef but bones from any healthy animal should do)

2. Slow cooker

3. Water to fill pot and cover bones

4. 1 Tbsp of vinegar (I used apple cider vinegar)

Directions:

  1. Place bones in slow cooker
  2. Fill slow cooker with water, ensuring bones are covered
  3. Add vinegar
  4. Cook on low for 30-48 hours
  5. Strain broth, discarding bones

I use the stock as a base and then add veggies, spices, etc. for extra flavour later when I make soups.
